Congratulations to the iconic Leeds venue Brudenell Social Club who won the Inspirational Venue of the Year award for under 500 capacity, at the first ever Northern Music Awards, hosted by the UK music therapy charity, Nordoff and Robbins. Manchester’s Band on the Wall also won the under 2,000 capacity award at this week's event, which was compared by BBC Radio 6’s Chris Hawkins. Thank you all, we very much appreciate all the support that everyone gives. A venue is a team, as we all know, from bar to cleaner, to engineer to booker, to the artists on stage, to the audience and patrons that come and contribute. We constantly take inspiration and ideas from all the great venues in our community… and we call it a community because that’s exactly what it is! The sharing of ideas, knowledge, collective bargaining, and importantly support both economically, ideologically, socially and personally towards the spaces and teams that makes it happen in our venue network, all of it, across the UK. We’re pleased to sit alongside and part of a likeminded group, it’s what keeps us going! This award is really for all places making a differing and enriching lives, giving employment & cultural opportunities… Never sit still, let’s keep on doing what we all do!

We're often contacted by people asking how they can help protect their local grassroots music venues, and while there's a hundred ways we can respond to that - one of the first things you can do is write to your local MP and tell them what issues are happening in your community.

If you visit WriteToThem.com you can find the contact details for your local MP. Tell them what's happening, and why these venues mean so much to you. The more they understand how important this is to so many people like you, and the more noise we can collectively make, the more the message will sink in from the top down. ... See MoreSee Less

Something I learned when I did some temporary work for an MP. Write using your own words so the staff handling it take more notice. Eg then postcards provided by a cause ended up in a box. It was pre 2010 but the point is the same sending an identical form email might not be as effective as the personal touch.

I try and help grassroots musicians and the venues if I can. I always post their posters and help as much as possible by sharing in my group and around the Web. I have been concerned about venues shutting down in the south. Not many open nowadays or places where they can play every day. We were told a few years ago they would build a new build for musicians but we are still waiting. I have been a fan of music all my life and it needs to be saved. I'm glad that people like you are helping them as well. I also post your posts in my group MUSICIANS ALIKE 2. Thank you for sharing all the information about topics that concerns us all.

As well as campaigning, gathering data, fundraising, and creating awareness for the grassroots sector, our Emergency Response team are fighting in the trenches every week to keep venues operating. In just the last week we've liaised with a venue in London facing challenges around altering their licensable live music hours, a venue in Manchester hit by bereavement impacting their business structure, and a venue in Wales with financial difficulties.

We want to work with arenas and their promoters to ensure they are part of the grassroots ecosystem alongside our members. However, we were told by the Co-op Live Arena that grassroots music venues were poorly run and that the reason they won’t financially contribute to that ecosystem is that they don’t need the acts that come through it, publicly stating that they don’t believe there are problems with the UK music talent pipeline.

This lack of willingness to play a role in that ecosystem unfortunately leads them to make ill-judged and poorly considered comments about the sector’s approach to the discussions, the professionalism of the people running the venues, the possibility for Oakview Group to financially support them, and about any obstacles that might prevent that financial support getting to where it’s needed and doing the work it needs to do.

Obviously, the irony of making ill-judged, unnecessary and misleading comments about grassroots music venues on the day that the launch of their new arena has unfortunately fallen into such difficulties is not lost on anyone in the music industry, on artists, or on audiences. We still wish Co-Op Live all the very best in delivering the forthcoming shows. Hopefully tackling these challenges might give them a chance to reconsider their position on supporting the UK’s music talent pipeline with meaningful actions which would actually make a difference.

The UK’s grassroots music venues are not "poorly run," and it is disrespectful and disingenuous to suggest otherwise. This is a highly skilled and experienced sector facing almost insurmountable and highly specialist challenges. I’m not sure that you blowing raspberries, and putting an even greater barrier between you and them is an appropriate response to what’s happening there.
